What to wear to a family photoshoot? How to plan your family's wardrobe?
Have you ever skipped getting family photos done for a year or even years because you didn’t know what your family should wear and you just felt too overwhelmed with the task? Well, I am here to help ease that feeling and make this task easier for you.
Begin by picking a color palette. This could be the current season’s colors or the color palette you have chosen to decorate your house, if you plan on hanging some photos on your wall gallery. These colors must complement each other and not clash.
Once you’ve chosen your color palette, you can begin to find clothing items your family already owns that fit your picked color palette. It is important to note, however, that color isn’t all that matters but style also matters. When choosing your family’s already owned items or items you intend to purchase, make sure they fit the same style/vibe. For example, you can either go with formal wear or casual wear but not both. Don’t have same family members dressed casual and others formal, as this would not be cohesive. The goal is to end up with a cohesive and harmonious wardrobe for the whole family so it will be pleasing to the eyes and every individual family member can stand out in their own way while, at the same time, keeping the feeling of unity.
I know choosing a color palette can be challenging as there are so many attractive options but, please, do not be tempted to forego this step and pick only one color for everyone or resort to a “uniform” approach (all with the same top and bottom colors) as this does not yield the most pleasant results. Instead, this makes it so that none stands out at all and just creates a much less interesting photo.
The idea of a monochrome palette may work for an individual person but not so much for a group of people, when it comes to family photos.
If you use these tips, you have a very good starting point and can confidently plan your family photoshoot wardrobe. Also, don’t be afraid to ask your photographer for help along the way. I know that some photographers offer free wardrobe consultations with every family session as I do. Good luck on your next family photoshoot!
