Professional photography is a beautiful art, of course I think so. :) However, because it is an art, each session is one of a kind, and the photos you get will only get more valuable as time goes by, professional photography can be expensive, and it should be, at least when you are getting a true professional with adequate skills and experience to deliver results you will love. Your photographer undertakes lots of expenses like gear, props, gas, electric, continuing education, and insurance, to name a few, plus, time and responsibility to be able to deliver beautiful portraits and products, so like any other professional, it’s only fair they are able to make a living with their craft.

So how can you afford professional photography?

  1. Plan & Act

Plan and act in advance. Notice I said plan and act, not simply plan. When you reach the second trimester of your pregnancy, or even sooner, research and choose your photographer, contact them and pay a retainer fee. A retainer fee allows you to book your session or sessions. You and your photographer will pick a date and pencil it in the calendar. Now, as we know, when it comes to newborn photography, you can’t be sure your due date will actually be the day you will deliver your little one. Most newborn photographers understand that and will be flexible with their schedule, so, if anything changes, your session date will also change. Now, after you have paid the retainer fee, you can you make monthly payments, or you can put some money away every month for this purpose . This is very helpful to you and most photographers offer this convenience. So instead of paying a big chunk of money, you can make multiple, smaller payments.

  2. Save in Advance

Start saving when you start planning to get pregnant or when you learn you are pregnant. Have a photography jar where you can put some change and accumulate it all throughout the pregnancy. Paying for your photography can be easier than you think.

  3. Gifts

You can include professional photography in your baby registry, or list of things you need for your baby. Most professional photographers have gift cards that your friends and family can purchase. Also, the grandparents of the baby are usually very generous and willing to help with this expense. They just love those photos maybe even more than you.

  4. Credit cards

Although that isn’t my number one advice for being able to afford professional photography, it is a viable option when all else fails and you were too late reading the rest of my tips, :) . A credit card can certainly be used to pay your photographer. You can then pay it off with smaller monthly payments. I can hear you ask, is it worth it? Yes, of course. As your little one grows and changes, those photos will only get more and more special, it’s an investment you make on loving memories.

Thank you for sticking with me to the end of this blog post! Until next time!
